Food security occurs when all people can access adequate amounts of nutritious and culturally acceptable foods in a socially acceptable manner. The opposite, food insecurity, can occur for a variety of reasons. These include:
Low income. Little or no funds to purchase foods after fixed costs like rent and utilities are paid.
High cost of nutritious foods.
Loss/lack of cooking skills.
Lack of supermarkets in low income areas leading to a dependence on convenience stores, which have higher priced foods and limited selections.
Transportation issues to local supermarkets.
Reliance on food banks and other emergency food services to meet the gap when the money runs out.
In addition, our local food system is vulnerable:
Food is transported thousands of kilometres before it reaches our table, a process that is harmful to the environment and unsustainable.
Supermarkets stock only two or three days' worth of food. A natural disaster or a prolonged border strike that prevented the "just-in-time" delivery system would result in empty shelves.
Dependence on global markets for food leaves us vulnerable to threats to that system.
Note enough food is produced and distributed on a local level. Local farmers would not be able to restock grocery store shelves in a disaster, especially in the winter.
Mass production and processing of food outside of Canada can result in a loss of control over safety standards of the foods we import.

Food For Change is a partnership of community members who share the common goal of achieving food security in Windsor and Essex county. The partnership was formed in June 2008 after a community forum on food security demonstrated a need for collaborative action.
Our mission is to engage agencies and individuals from various sectors to work together to increase access to healthy food for all residents.
Members of Food For Change include those who work directly with food insecure populations such as: food banks, food cooperatives, and other food programs. Additional partners are involved in the agricultural sector, urban gardening projects, and the health sector.
